steel, plasticThe Inheritance bench is a low-weight, customizable sitting system, originally developed as part of the Nostalgia For A World That Never Existed installation. It is a negotiation between the nostalgia of vernacular handcraft and industrial production methods, bridging the gap between tradition and contemporaneity.
A traditional chair with a woven seat is deconstructed and transformed through vacuum forming, creating a lightweight translucent surface that mimics the textures of the original straw. The resulting three dimensional texture reinforces the plastic making the seat structurally sound. Individual plastic seats are embedded into a minimal steel construction, which can be adjusted to carry any number of seats.
The result is a sleek bench, a ghostly figure of its former self, positioning the folk into contemporary spaces.
